1960年代末、南ウェールズでローカル・ブルース・バンドThe Cellar Setを率いて活動。1970年、脱退したRalph Denyerの後任として同郷のプログレッシヴ・グループBlonde On Blondeに加入。この時まだ18歳の若さだった。
Emberと新規契約を果たし、方向性をプログレッシヴなものへと変化させる。後年に再評価される２枚のアルバムをリリースするも、商業的な成功を得ることはできなかった。サード・アルバムリリース後の72年初頭には中心人物のGareth Johnsonが脱退。残された３人のメンバーで最後のツアーを行い、同年に解散を迎えた。
1970年代半ばにはHugh Gregoryとフォーク・デュオを結成し、フォーク・クラブなどを中心に演奏。その後はブルースに回帰し、ShortstuffやDave Thomas & The Diplomaticsを率いて長く活動、アルバム「Shotgun Blues」をリリース。また、長年に渡る活動で残した音源をまとめた自身初のソロ・アルバムを残したほか、近年はThe Dave Thomas Bandを率いて活動している。
