1945年４月12日生まれ。スコットランドのレンフルーシャー州ヒューストン出身。ブルース・ロック系のビッグ・ネームを多数渡り歩いた名ギタリスト兼シンガー。
1964年、The Royal Crestsというローカル・グループでスコットランドをベースにプロとしての本格的な音楽活動をスタート。Karl Stuart & The Profilesに発展したグループは1965年３月にロンドンに進出、1966年にはフリーク・ビートのThe Voiceにバンド名を改め、同年までに計４枚のシングルをリリースした。
1960年代後半は後にMott The Hoopleの中心人物となるIan HunterやドラマーのDave Dufortらと活動。The SceneryやPaper Blitz Tissue、Charlie Woolfeなど様々なフリーク・ビート系バンドで活動するが、大きな成功を収めるには至らなかった。
1968年秋、Keef Hartleyによって結成されて間もないKeef Hartley Bandに加入。リード・ギタリスト、リード・シンガー、メイン・ソングライターとして活躍、バンドの中心メンバーとして1971年まで在籍し５枚のアルバムに参加し大きな成功と高い評価を得た。
脱退後には名ソロ・アルバム「Bright City」をリリース。ソロ名義でギグも行い、この時の自身のグループの後進に当たるHemlockでもアルバムを発表した。1974年初頭には同グループのリズム・セクションJim Leverton、Eric Dillonを引き連れて名ブルース・バンドSavoy Brownに加入し、Kim Simmonds、Stan Webbとのトリプル・ギター体制が話題となった。
その後もHartleyと再会してのDog Soldier、さらには後期のT.RexやDonovanのバック、Jimmy McCullochとのThe Dukesなど多数のビッグ・ネームを渡り歩いた。1980年代にはアメリカでも積極的に活動し、Leslie WestとのMountainやChicken Shack、再編されたSpencer Davis Groupなどで活動。1990年以降はDeep PurpleのJon Lordとも活動を活発化させた。
