1941年5月22日生まれ。北西ロンドンのパークロイヤル出身。Joe Cockerのバックバンドとして知られるThe Grease BandやFairport Conventonなどのグループで活躍したドラマー。セッション・ドラマーとして多くのレコーディングに参加したほか、プロデューサーとしても知られGerry LockranやTony KellyらSSW系アーティストの作品を手掛けた。
1960年代は多くのショーバンドでドラマーとしての経験を積み、ドラム講師も務める。1968年、オルガン奏者Mick WeaverのプロジェクトWynder K. Frogに加入しアルバム制作やギグに参加。
1969年初頭にはリズムセクションの抜けたJoe CockerのバックバンドThe Grease BandにAlan Spennerとともに加入。Cockerのセカンド・アルバム「Joe Cocker !」の録音に参加したほか、伝説となったウッドストック・フェスでもCockerのバックで演奏した。
Terry Reid Bandの米国ツアー参加を経て同年夏頃からはThe Grease Band単独での活動をスタートさせ、1971年春には英スワンプロックの佳作と評価の高い1stアルバムを制作した。同年夏にプロデュース業への転身のためバンドを離脱するが、1975年の再編セカンド・アルバム「Amazing Grease」、81年3月の準メンバーWeaverを加えた編成での再編ツアーにも参加している。
1973年にはFacesを脱退したRonnie Laneが結成したSlim Chanceに参加。翌74年にリリースされた傑作ファースト・アルバム「Anymore For Anymore」に参加した。1975年にはDave Mattacksの後任としてFairport Conventionに加入し、Sandy Dennyが参加した最後のアルバム「Rising For The Moon」の録音から1979年の解散まで在籍。80年の再結成以降後も80年代半ば頃まで断続的にギグへの参加を続けた。その後、デンマークに移住。
プロデューサーとしても手腕を発揮し、Gerry LockranやTony Kellyら通好みのSSW系アーティストの作品を手掛けたほか、ブルース・ロック・バンドJuicy Lucyのラスト・アルバム「Pieces」などの作品を担当している。
セッション・ドラマーとしても数多くのアルバムに参加しており、Ronnie Lane’s Slim Chanceで一緒になったGallagher & Lyleのアルバムや盟友Bryn Haworthのソロ・アルバムなどに参加。Fairport加入後はDave Swarbrickのソロ作の常連としても活躍した。2015年6月29日がんのため他界。
