1951年12月23日生まれ。西ロンドンのチズウィック出身。Genesisのオリジナル・ギタリスト。70年代中期からはソロ・アーティストとして長く活躍した。
60年代半ば、サリー州にあるチャーターハウス・パブリック・スクールで後にSavoy Brownに加わるベーシストRivers JobeやともにGenesisの結成に参加するMike Rutherfordら学友とThe Spidersを結成、グループは後にThe AnonやThe Spoken Worldに発展する。
The Anonと同校の別バンドThe Garden Wallが合体する形で、67年初頭にGenesisを結成する。同校OBでソングライター/プロデューサーとして活躍していたJonathan Kingに認められ、Deccaとの契約を獲得。69年にアルバム「From Genesis To Revelation」でデビューを飾る。
同アルバムは、すでに同じ名前のグループが米国に存在していたためにジャケットにグループ名が明記されず、商業的な成功を収めるには至らなかった。当初音楽性はフォーク・タッチのポップ志向だったが、次第にプログレッシヴなものに転換を図り、まもなくCharismaに移籍し70年秋にはプログレッシヴ・ロック・グループとしての実質的なデビュー作とも言えるセカンド・アルバム「Trespass」をリリースした。
同作では個性的なアコースティック・ギターを披露するなど、音作りに大きな貢献を果たしたものの、ツアーの連続による疲労から健康を害したこと、さらに音楽理論やオーケストレーション、ピアノ、クラシック・ギターなどを本格的に学び直すためにセカンド・アルバムの録音後に脱退した。
1974年ごろからソロとして音楽活動を再開。77年にはRutherford、Phil CollinsらGenesisのメンバーの協力で自身初のソロ・アルバム「The Greese And The Ghost」を発表。同作は当初自主制作盤としてリリースされたが、予想外の好セールスを記録した。
その後、ライフワークとも言えるプライベートな小作品などを集めた「Private Parts & Pieces」（PP&P）シリーズをはじめとするソロ作品をコンスタントに制作し続けた。このほか、Harry Williamsonや日本人パーカッション奏者Joji Hirota、スペイン人ギタリストGullermo Cazenaveらとのコラボレート作、ライブラリー音源など多数の作品を残している。
セッション参加としては、Camelの82年のアルバム「The Single Factor」や仲間内のMike Rutherford、Steve Hackettのソロ・アルバムへの参加がよく知られる。
