1950年8月30日生まれ。ヨークシャー州ミドルスブラ出身。Whitesnakeのギタリストとして世界的な知名度を持つ名ギタリスト。1970年代はJuicy LucyやSnafuなどブルース・ロック系名グループでも活動。
1963年、後にFreeで名声を得る学友のPaul Rodgersらと学生バンドRoadrunnersを結成。1967年にベースにBruce Thomasを加えてバンド名をWild Flowersに変えてロンドン進出を果たす。しかし、もまもなく解散を余儀なくされたため、アコースティック・ギターを学ぶために一時帰郷を決意する。
ブルース・シンガーJohn McCoyらとブルース・バンドTramlineを結成し２枚のアルバムをリリース。解散後はMike Cotton Soundに加わり、Zoot Money’s Music Band名義でZoot Moneyのバックを務める。同年のMoneyのソロ・アルバムの録音にも参加している。
1970年7月にはヘヴィ・ブルース・バンドJuciy Lucyに加入。激しいメンバー・チェンジの中でシンガーのPaul Williamsとともに中心人物として活躍、オリジナル・メンバーでリーダーのGlenn Campbell離脱後もバンドを支え、「Lie Back And Enjoy It」以降計3枚のアルバムを残した。
1972年秋には元FreedomのBobby Harrisonと合流してSnafuを結成。英スワンプ・ロックの名作アルバム３枚を残したが、商業的な成功を収めるには至らなかった。この頃からセッション活動も精力的にこなすようになり、他アーティストのレコーディング参加や後期Snafuで一緒になったTim Hinkleyのジャム・バンドHinkley Heroes、Frankie Miller Bandでも活動。1977年にはStatus Quoの5人目のメンバーと言われた作詞家のBob YoungとのユニットYoung & Moody（後にThe Young & Moody Band）としても活動しアルバムを残している。
1976年にはDeep Purpleの解散を受けてソロ活動をスタートさせたDavid Coverdaleと合流し2枚のソロ・アルバム制作に協力。1978年初頭にはCoverdaleが結成したWhitesnakeにBernie Marsden、Neil Murrayら盟友とともに参加。1983年末まで在籍し、ハード・ロック、ヘヴィ・メタル・シーンの盛り上がりを追い風に大きな成功を収めている。
1990年代以降は、盟友MarsdenとThe Moody Marsden Band、The Snakes、The Company Of Snakes（Whitesnake時代の曲をセルフ・カバーするグループ）、M3などWhitesnakeのスピンオフ的グループで活動。その一方でセッション活動も継続させ、多くのアーティストのレコーディングに参加した。
また、Juicy Lucy時代からの旧友Paul WilliamsとのBlue Thunderやコラボ作、2000年代以降に本格化させたソロ活動など、ブルースに回帰した演奏活動にも意欲的に取り組んだ。
