1948年11月10日生まれ。イングランド南岸ドーセットのプール出身。King Crimsonのオリジナル・メンバーで、Emerson, Lake & Palmerで世界的な成功を収めたプログレッシヴ・ロック・シーンを代表するヴォーカリスト/ベーシスト。
ボーンマスで育ち、12歳の誕生日に母親からギターをプレゼントされ、ギターレッスンを受けつつまもなくバンド活動をスタート。同じギター教室には後に共にKing Crimsonを立ち上げる少年時代のRobert Frippも通っていた。
まもなくバンド仲間らとローカル・グループUnit Four、The Time Checksを組んで活動。1967年にはUnit Fourで一緒だったキーボードのJohn Dickensonらとビート・グループThe Shameを結成し、MGMから唯一のシングル「Don’t Go’ Way Little Girl」でメジャー・デビューを果たす。
1968年には後にUriah Heepを結成するKen HensleyのグループThe Godsを挟んでThe Shameの後進バンドShy Limbsを結成し、シングル1枚の録音に参加。1969年初頭、同郷のFrippに誘われてKing Crimsonに加入。ヴォーカリストとして参加するが、同時期にベースのPeter Gilesがバンドを離れたためベースを兼任することになった。翌69年にデビュー・アルバムにしてロック史に名を残す名盤となった「In The Court Of The Crimson King」を発表。
しかし、直後の北米ツアーで一緒になったThe NiceのKeith Emersonと意気投合し、新バンド結成を構想。Crimsonのセカンド・アルバムの録音を手伝った後、ドラマーにCarl Palmerを迎え、Emerson, Lake & Palmerを結成する。計10枚のアルバムをリリース。70年代を代表するプログレッシヴ・ロック・バンドとして多数の名作を残し、商業的にも大きな成功を収めた。
1978年末のELP解散後はソロに転向。名手Gary Mooreらを擁する自身のバンドを編成してソロ・アルバム2枚を制作した。1983年にはJohn Wettonの代役でPalmerのいるAsiaにも短期参加。1980年後半にはEmersonとELP再編を計画するが、PalmerがAsiaで活動を続けていたためにCozy Powellを招へい、Emerson,Lake & Powell名義でアルバム1枚を制作した。この後Palmerを加えて再び再結成に向けてリハーサルを行うが、今度はLake自身が離脱、EmersonとPalmerはThree名義で活動を行った。
ELP再編は1991年に実現。新作「Black Moon」をリリースするなど1998年まで活動を継続させた。2010年には僚友Emersonと組んで北米ツアーを行う。同年7月にはロンドンのフェスで一夜限りのELP再結成が実現している。
プロデューサーとしては1972年にHarvestからデビューしたHRトリオSpontaneous CombustionやManticoreレーベル契約第1号アーティストとなった米国出身のStray Dogなどの隠れた名グループを手がけている。
