1942年６月13日生まれ。サリー州ウェスト・バイフリート出身。盟友Bob BrunningやDave Kellyらとともに英国ブルース・シーンをけん引し続けたブルース・ピアニスト。
1963年末、ギタリストTony McPheeらと結成したJohn Lee’s Groundhogsでメジャー・デビューを飾る。1966年初頭にはKim Simmondsが結成して間もないSavoy Brown Blues Bandに参加。同年リリースしたデビュー・シングルが評判を呼び、Deccaとの契約を獲得する。当時はロンドンの「シティ」で働くビジネスマンでミュージシャンとの二束のわらじ生活を送っていた。ただ、準公的な職場だったこともありメジャー・デビュー以降は公けにはできず、同グループではレコーディング・セッションのみ参加するパートタイム・メンバーとして初期４枚のアルバムに参加した。
1968年にはJohn Dummer Bandに加わり、セカンド・アルバムの録音に参加。同年にはSavoy Brownで一緒になったベーシストBrunningらとBrunning Sunflower Blues Bandを結成し、Peter Green、Jo Ann Kellyら一線級の英ブルース系ミュージシャンをゲストに1971年までに４枚のアルバムをリリースした。
翌1969年にはPeter Edenプロデュースで豪華ラインナップの一大ブルース・プロジェクトTrampにも参加するなど精力的に活動した。1970年代以降はギタリストDave Kellyとのコラボでアルバムを制作。1980年代には再びBrunningとDeluxe Blues Bandを結成し、息の長い活躍を続けた。1979年にはソロ名義の「Left Hand Roller」をリリース。
2000年代には60年代から英国ブルース・シーンを支えてきた歴戦のベテランによるThe British Blues All Starsを立ち上げ、フェスなどで演奏活動を展開した。2014年には元Ten Years AfterのドラマーRic LeeのグループRic Lee’s Natural Born Swingersでも活動。
