1949年9月5日生まれ。西ミッドランズ・スタッフォードシャーのタンワース出身。ColosseumやHumble PieをはじめJack Bruceとの活動などがよく知られるブルース系ギタリスト/シンガー。愛称”Clem”。
バーミンガムのローカル・グループCock A Hoopを経て1968年、ブルース・ロック・トリオBakerloo Blues Lineを結成する。ベースにTerry Poole、ドラマーに同じCock A Hoop出身のKeith Bakerを加えたラインナップでHarvestでデビュー・アルバムを制作。同作はブルースのジャズのエッセンスを盛り込んだ名盤となったが、リリース前にPoole、Bakerが離脱、活動は暗礁に乗り上げる。
このころにギグでColosseumの前座を務めたことがきっかけとなり、Jon Hisemanにスカウトされ加入を決意。ＵＳ盤のギター・パートが録り直されてリリースされた傑作セカンド「Valentyne Suite」や「Colosseum Live」などの名作に参加。1971年10月、Steve Marriottの要請でHumble Pieへの移籍を決意、これに伴いバンドは解散している。
後期Humble Pieでは米国でも大きな成功を収める。1975年の解散後は再び末期Bakerlooで短期活動したCozy Powellと組んでStrange Brewを結成するもすぐに頓挫。再びMarriottと合流し、彼のグループSteve Marriott’s All Starsに加わった。
70年代後半は自身のリーダーグループRough Diamondやその後進グループに当たるChampionを率いてアルバムを各１枚を残す。1980年代はJack Bruce Bandに主軸メンバーとして活動。セッション・ギタリストとしても多数のアーティストのアルバムやバックを務める活躍をみせた。
1994年には黄金期のラインナップでColosseumを再結成し、息の長い活動を続けた。
