1947年8月23日生まれ。ロンドン出身。本名Linda Pettifer。1972年にRichard Thompsonと結婚しRichard & Linda Thompsonとして活躍。結婚前はLinda Petersを名乗っていた。俳優のBrian Pettiferは実兄。
6歳の時にグラスゴーに移住。66年頃からフォーク・クラブで歌うようになり、大学進学を機に67年にロンドンへ。Linda Petersを名乗ってフォーク・クラブで活動する一方、コマーシャル・ジングルなどを歌うセッション・シンガーを務める。
この頃から同じくフォーク・シーンで活動していたSandy Dennyと交流を深め、69年には録音に訪れたスタジオでFairport Convention時代のRichardと出会っている。Paul McNeilとのデュオでPaul & Lindaとしても活動。Bob Dylanのカバー・シングル「You Ain’t Going Nowhere」（MGM）など2枚のシングルをリリースしている。
72年初頭には、Trevor Lucas発案のFairport人脈による1950年代ロックンロール企画グループThe Bunchのアルバム「Rock On」のレコーディングに参加。これが縁で同年Richardと結婚。この後、Richard & Linda Thompsonとしての活動を始め、73年秋からはFairportを脱退したSimon Nicolを加えた3人でHokey Pokeyを名乗りツアーを敢行。
74年からは拡大版のSour Grapesを名乗ってもツアーを行っている。同年にファースト・アルバム「I Want To See The Bright Lights Tonight」を発表。続いてNicolがプロデュースを担当した「Hokey Pokey」をリリース。73年にはRichardとともにイスラム教に改宗している（数年後に再びキリスト教に改宗）。
デュオでは1982年の名作「Shoot Out The Lights」まで6枚のアルバムをリリースするが、まもなく離婚を機にパートナーシップを解消。1985年に初のソロ・アルバム「One Clear Moment」をリリースするが、その後は目立った活動を停止。未発表音源を含む編集アルバムのリリースを経て2002年に前夫RichardやTeddy Thompson、Kamila Thompsonら子供たちの協力を得て「Fashionably Late」で久々にシーンに復帰した。
2007年には5年振りの新作に加えて、75年にお蔵入りとなったRichard & Linda Thompsonのライブ・アルバムが発表されている。2013年にはアルバム「Won’t Be Long Now」をリリース、翌2014年にはThompson名義でファミリー・アルバム「Family」を発表した。
