1943年12月25日生まれ。オーストラリア・ヴィクトリア州バンガリー出身。Fairport ConventionやFotheringayなどのフォーク・ロック・バンドで活動したシンガーソングライター。プロデューサーとしても妻Sandy Dennyのアルバムを手掛けるなど手腕を発揮した。
1960年代前半、メルボルンのクラブでフォークやブルースの弾き語りなどを始める。64年にはファースト・ソロ・アルバム「See That My Grave Is Kept Clean」をリリース。65年に渡英しソロ、セッション活動を展開。1966年には後にコレクターズ・アイテムとなるセカンド・アルバム「Overlander」をRealityから発表している。67年にはフォーク・ロック・グループEclectionを結成しアルバム1枚を残した。
1970年3月には当時恋人だったFairport ConventionのSandy DennyとFotheringayを結成。アルバム1枚を残した。翌年初頭の解散後はIslandレーベルでDennyのソロ作のプロデュースやエンジニア業などをこなしたほか、セッション活動も行った。
72年にはFairport ConventionにFotheringay時代からの盟友Jerry Donahueとともに加入。翌73年にはDennyと結婚（Lucasは再婚）、Fairportのワールド・ツアーにDennyが同伴していたことで、Dennyも74年に正式に復帰を果たしている。
1976年初頭にDenny、Donahueとともにグループを離れる。77年にはDennyのソロ作「Rendezvous」をプロデュース。同年7月にはDennyとの間に長女をもうけ、一家で米国移住を計画していたが、1978年4月、友人宅での転落事故によりDennyが他界するという悲劇に見舞われる。
その後、オーストラリアに帰国。1980年代は主に自国でプロデュース業を中心に活動し、The BushwackersやGoanna、Redgumなど多数のアーティストのアルバム、シングルを手掛けた。また、度々英国に戻り、Fairportのクロップレディ・フェスにも参加した。1989年2月4日、45歳の若さで心臓発作のためオーストラリアで他界。
