1950年10月13日生まれ。北ロンドンのマスウェル・ヒル出身。Fairport Conventionのオリジナル・ギタリスト。71年末に一時グループを離れたが、76年に復帰しその後も同グループ唯一のオリジナル・メンバー、リーダーとしてグループをけん引し続けた。
1966年、地元マスウェル・ヒルでAshley Hutchingsらとジャグ・バンドEthnic Shuffle Orchestraを結成し活動。翌年春にはHutchingsとともに友人の紹介でRichard Thompsonを加えてFairport Conventionを結成する。当時、メンバーは「Fairport」と呼ばれていたNicolの実家でバンドの練習やミーティングを行っていたことから、これにちなんで友人がグループ名を命名している。
1968年、Jefferson Airplaneなどの米国西海岸のロックやJoni Mitchellら米国のSSWに影響を受けたセルフ・タイトルのアルバムでデビュー。同年、ヴォーカルにSandy Dennyを迎えて自国のトラッドに目を向けるようになり、69年にはトラッドとロックの融合を確立した歴史的名盤「Leige & Lief」、HutchingsとDennyが離れた翌70年には名作「Full House」を発表、ともに高い評価を得る。
1971年初頭にThompsonが離れた後は本来のリズム・ギターからリード・ギターに転向。さらにDave Swarbrickとリード・ヴォーカルも担当し「Angel Delighted」、コンセプト・アルバム「Babbacombe Lee」をリリースした。同年末にグループを離れ、Hutchingsと合流。Shirley Collins & The Albion Country Bandの名盤「No Roses」のレコーディングに参加し、翌年からはAshleyのリーダー・グループAlbion Country Bandで活動。
70年代半ばにはRichard & Linda Thompsonと合流してレコーディングやライブをサポート。また、73～74年に3人でツアーした時のバンド名をアルバム名とした「Hokey Pokey」（同名曲も収録）のプロデュースも手掛けている。AshleyとはEtchingham Steam Band、Albion Dance Bandでも一緒に活動。Albion Bandにはその後も度々メンバーとしてレコーディングやギグに参加している。
当初Swarbrickのソロ作として制作が進められたFairport名義のアルバム「Gottle O’Geer」へのゲスト参加を経て、1976年9月に正式に復帰。一時解散する79年までSwarbrick、Dave Peggとともにグループを支えた。解散後まもなくFairportとして再び活動を再開、80年代半ばからはパーマネントな活動に入り、長くグループのリーダーとして精力的な活動を継続した。1998年からはSteve GibbonsのBob Dylanトリビュート・グループThe Dylan ProjectでPeggやGerry Conwayらと活動した。
1980年代前半は盟友Swarbrickとのコラボレートでアルバム制作ほかギグを展開。ソロ活動は少ないが、ソロ・アルバムとしては87年に「Before Your Time」、92年に「Consonant Please Carol」をリリースしている。堅実なパフォーマンスを裏付けるようにセッション活動は多岐に渡り、Fairportメンバーらとともにフォーク系ミュージシャンの作品多数に参加している。
