1946年6月16日生まれ。リンカシャー出身。本名Iain Matthews McDonald。英国フォーク・ロック・シーンを代表するＳＳＷの1人。長いソロ・キャリアのほかMatthews Southern ComfortやPlainsongなどの名グループを率いて良質な作品を多数発表した。自作曲にこだわらず、他アーティストの楽曲を積極的に取り上げることでも知られる。
リンカシャーのスカンソープで育ち、1960年代半ばにロンドンに進出する。1966～67年にはThe Pyramidというヴォーカル・ハーモニー・バンドで活動し、Deramからシングル1枚を発表した。1967年、フォーク・クラブでRichard Thompsonらと知り合いFairport Conventionに加入。Matthewsの加入でオリジナル・ラインナップが揃う。デビュー当時はMacDonald姓を名乗っていたが、King CrimsonのIan McDonaldとの混同を避けるため、まもなくMatthewsに改名している。
自身は米国南部志向が強かったが、フォーク・シーンで活動してきたシンガーSandy Dennyの加入をきっかけにグループが自国の伝統音楽への関心を強める中、69年初頭に脱退。翌年、Fairportのメンバーらの協力で初のソロ・アルバム「Matthews Southern Comfort」を発表する。
続いてアルバムと同名グループMatthews Southern Comfortを結成。2枚のアルバムをリリース、シングル「Woodstock」が大ヒットを記録する。しかし、メジャー志向のメンバーと意見が衝突し、同年秋には自身がバンドから身を引く。その後、Vertigoとソロ契約を結び、再びソロ活動へ。
1972年にはAndy RobertsらとPlainsongを結成し、名作「In Search Of Amelia Earheart」をリリースしたが、活動は短期に終わった。翌73年には渡米、ツアーバンドを組んで積極的に活動するも、ソロ・アルバムの売り上げは不振に陥る。
1978年に再び英国に拠点を移し、プロデューサーSandy Robertsonが設立したレーベルRockburghと新たに契約。久々のシングル・ヒットにも恵まれた。この頃はMark Griffiths、Mick Weaverらを擁するバック・バンドを率いてツアー、来日も果たしている。しかし、同レーベルの経営悪化とともに活動も低迷。81年には移住先のシアトルで新グループHi-Fiを結成するが、セールスは伸び悩んだ。
1980年代半ばには一時Island、Windham Hill両レーベルでA&Rマンとして新人発掘などの仕事に就いたが、88年にカムバック。1989年からは名前の表記を本名のIainとし、活発なソロ、プロジェクト活動を展開。1990年代に入ってRobertsやGriffithsとPlainsongを再結成、ソロ活動と平行して長らく活動を継続した。
