1941年12月2日生まれ。南ロンドンのウィンブルドン出身。Manfred Mannのメンバーとして知られるギタリスト。その後もMcGuinness FlintやThe Blues Bandのメンバーとして長年に渡って英国のロック・シーンで活躍を続けた。
故郷ウィンブルドンでセミプロとして活動後にプロに転向し、1963年にはブレイク前のEric ClaptonとThe RoostersやCasey Jones & The Engineersなどでともにプレイする。従来リズム・ギターを担当していたが、1964年初頭にセミプロ時代の仲間Paul Jonesが在籍していたManfred Mannにベーシストとして起用される。1965年秋にMike Vickersが脱退した際に本来の担当楽器のギターにチェンジ。グループは数多くのヒット・シングルを放ち、ビート・グループとして大きな成功を収める。1969年の解散まで在籍。
1969年末にはClapton在籍時のJohn Mayall’s BluesbreakersのドラマーだったHughie FlintやGallagher & LyleとMcGuinness Flintを結成。デビュー・シングルが全英2位の大ヒットを記録し、続くアルバムも9位と幸先の良いスタートを切る。その後、計5枚のアルバム（うち1枚はCoulson Dean McGuinness Flint名義）を発表し、ルーラル・ロック・バンドとして人気を得た。
解散後の1975年からはMcGuinness Flintの後期メンバーだったLou StonebridgeとStonebridge McGuinnessの名前で活動し、複数のシングルとアルバム1枚を残したほか、ソングライティングやプロデューサー業などを共同で行い、自身のバンドThe Blues BandやDave Kellyのソロ・シングル、パワー・ポップのCharlie Fawnなどを担当。このほか単独プロデュースとしてはパブ・ロック・バンドBrewers Droopのアルバム「Opening Time」などを手掛けている。
1979年にはFlintやManfred Mann時代の仲間Paul Jones、ブルース・ギタリストのDave KellyらとThe Blues Bandを結成。ロンドン屈指のライブ・アクトとして活躍した。1983年にはその後進グループDave Kelly Bandでの短期活動を経て、The Blues Band時代からともにソングライティングを行ってきたGraham LyleとThe Lyle McGuinness Bandを組んでアルバム、シングルを残す。
1980年代半ばにはThe Blues Bandをリユニオンさせる一方、1990年代に入ると、リーダーのManfred Mann不在ながらJonesらとManfred Mannの中心メンバーによるThe Manfredsを立ち上げ、いずれも息の長い活動を継続させた。2000年代にはソロ・アルバムを2枚制作している。
