1947年1月6日生まれ。ウィンブルドン出身。Fairport Conventionへの参加やソロとしての活動が著名な英フォーク界最高の女性シンガー兼ソングライター。
キングストン・アート・カレッジを卒業後、看護士の仕事をしながらフォーク・クラブなどでソロ・アーティストとして活動を開始。1967年にはSagaレーベルで企画物（複数のアーティストによるカップリング）のアルバム2枚を録音。同年後半からはStrawbsに加わり約半年間活動した。
1968年、Judy Dybleの後任でFairport Conventionに加入。セカンド・アルバムから3枚のアルバム制作に参加した。Sandyの加入でグループは当初のウエスト・コースト・サウンドやサイケデリックな米国志向から脱して自国のフォーク・ミュージックに接近、69年リリースの傑作アルバム「Leige & Lief」でエレクトリック・フォークの新分野の境地を切り開いた。しかし、本作録音後の69年11月に脱退。恋人だったTrevor Lucasと共に過ごす時間が欲しかったためと言われている。
翌年、LucasやJerry Donahue、Gerry Conway、Pat Donaldsonら後のFairportファミリーとなるメンバーで自身のグループFotheringayを結成、アルバム、シングル各1枚を残す。同グループ解散後の71年からは本格的なソロ活動を開始し「The North Star Grassman And The Ravens」（71年）や「Sandy」（72年）などの意欲的な作品をリリースし、高い評価を得る。
1973年にLucasと結婚。74年にはLucasが加入していたFairportに再加入し2枚のアルバム（うち1枚はライブ）に参加した。76年初頭に再びグループを離れ、ソロ活動を再開。77年にはソロ作「Rendezvous」をリリース。同年7月には長女を出産し、この後、活動の舞台をアメリカに移すことを計画していた。しかし、1978年4月21日、友人宅で誤って階段から転落し頭を打ったことが要因で若くして他界した。
死後には多くの未発表曲集やベスト盤がリリースされ、後進のフォーク系女性シンガーらに多大な影響を与え続けた。セッション歴としてはLed Zeppelinの「IV」への参加が有名。
