1949年5月18日生まれ。西ロンドンのペリベール出身。プログレッシヴ・ロック・シーンを代表するキーボード奏者。黄金期のYesやソロ・ミュージシャンとして活躍、「マルチ・キーボード」の先駆者とされる。本国では司会者や評論家などタレント活動でも知られる。
6歳からピアノのレッスンを始め、コンサート・ピアニストを目指して研さんを重ねる。クラシックの素養を身に付ける一方で10代半ばからはブルースやロックンロールなどにも関心を強め、カレッジ・バンドを結成して演奏活動もスタートさせる。
1967年、ロイヤル・カレッジ・オブ・ミュージックに進学し作曲などを学ぶ。しかし、この頃から楽譜を初見で演奏できる高い応用力と確かな演奏技術が認められセッション・ミュージシャンとしての活動が多くなり、多忙のために2年で退学。膨大なセッション・ワークは多岐に渡り、一説ではシングル600枚、アルバム400枚に参加しているとも言われている。
セッションの一方でいくつかのグループのメンバーとしても活動を続けていたが、1970年にはプロデューサーのGus DudgeonやTony Viscontiとの仕事をこなすうちにこの人脈からセッション参加していたフォーク・ロック・バンドStrawbsの正式メンバーに昇格、ライブ作を含む2枚のアルバムに参加する。
これが評判となり、翌年にはTony Kayeの後任でYesへの加入が決定。「Fragile」「Close To The Edge」などの傑作アルバムの制作に大きく貢献し黄金期を支えた。1974年には方向性への不満などからグループ内で孤立し脱退するが、1976年に復帰。以降脱退と再加入を繰り返し、2002年には通算5度目の加入を果たした（2004年に5度目の脱退）。
一方でYes在籍時から精力的なソロ活動を行っており、1973年にはデビュー作「The Six Wives Of Henry VII」を発表。次作「Journey To The Center Of The Earth」は全英チャートの首位に輝くなど世界的な大ヒットとなり、特に初期のソロ作品はオーケストラとロックを融合させたコンセプト作品として本家のYesを凌ぐほどの高い人気を呼んだ。
その後、膨大な数のソロ関連作品をコンスタントに制作。サウンドトラック作品やクラシック志向、インスト作など音楽性も多岐にわたり、ニューエイジ・ミュージックやクリスチャン・ミュージックなど非ロック色の強い作品も多い。
また、息子たちもキーボード奏者として活躍しており、長男のOliverはソロ・アーティストとして活躍したほか2008年にはYesに参加。次男Adamとの双頭グループWakeman with Wakemanでも活動した。このほか、彼のソロ作品のパートナーだったドラマーのTony FernandezやStrawbsのリーダーDave Cousins、Yesの仲間Jon Andersonとのコラボレート作品を残している。
