1943年4月26日生まれ。米国ニュージャージー州クレススキル出身。Mike Harrisonとともに渡英後に参加したヘヴィ・ロックバンドSpooky Toothのけん引役を担う。帰国後の1970年代後半からはソロとして活動し、大きなヒットを生むなど成功を収めた。
幼少の頃から子役としてテレビ出演やブロードウェイの舞台に立つなどショービジネスの世界で活躍。一方でR&Bやソウル・ミュージックに傾倒してピアノを学び、1960年にはGary & Billy名義でシングルをリリースしている。
大学で心理学の学位を得た後ヨーロッパに渡り、ベルリン大学に在籍して学業を継続。一方で60年代半ばにはThe New York Timesというソウル・ロックのバンドを率いて活動。ヨーロッパでツアー中の1967年7月、スカンジナビア・ツアーでTrafficの前座として演奏した際、IslandレーベルのプロデューサーChris Blackwellの目に止まる。
ロンドンでレコーディングのチャンスを与えられたが、Blackwellの提案で当時彼がTrafficとともに力を入れていたサイケデリック・グループのArtへの加入が決定。Wrightの加入で改めてSpooky Toothへと改名して活動をリスタートさせる。
翌68年初頭、Wrightのオリジナル曲「Sunshine Help Me」でシングル・デビュー。春にはアルバム「It’s All About A Roundabout」を発表する。同年秋にはThe Bandの名曲の秀逸カバー「The Weight」をリリース。69年3月にはバンドの最高傑作と評価されるセカンド・アルバム「Spooky Two」を発表、アメリカでもヒットするなど順調にキャリアを重ねていく。
1970年2月にグループを脱退。セッション活動やプロデュース業を経て71年にA&Mとソロ契約。ベースのArchie Leggetや後期Spooky Toothでも活動するドラマーBryson Graham、ギターのMick Jonesら名手を揃えた自身のバンドWonderwheelを率いてソロ活動を展開。1971年にはソロ・デビュー・アルバム「Extraction」、続く72年には第2弾「Footprint」を発表する。
72年秋にはHarrisonとSpooky Toothを再編。74年の再解散後はWarner Bros.と契約し、帰国して再びソロ活動へ。1970年代後半から80年代にかけてソロ・キャリアのピークを迎え、いずれもビルボードチャートの第2位まで上昇する「Dream Weaver」「Love Is Alive」などの大ヒットシングルをリリース、大きな成功を収めた。
その後もロスを拠点にソロ活動、プロデュース業などを継続。2000年代には再結成したSpooky Toothでも活動した。
