1948年6月29日生まれ。ノッティンガム出身。最強ハード・ロック・グループDeep Purpleのオリジナル・メンバー。1980年代の再結成以降も一貫してグループを支え続け、メンバーで唯一、全アルバムに参加したパワー・ドラマー。
7歳の時にオックスフォード近郊のビスターに移る。15歳の頃からドラムスを始め、1960年代半ばはGeorgie & The Rave-Onsに加わり、本格的な演奏活動をスタート。1965年にはThe Shindigsに改名（同時期にParlophoneからシングル2枚をリリースしているThe Shindigsは同名別グループ）。
1966年にはRod Evansがフロントマンを務めるグループThe M.I. 5に加入。シングル1枚をリリースしてグループ名をThe Mazeに改名、本国、イタリアからシングルを数枚リリース、フランスではEPを発表するも大きな成功を収められなかった。1968年2月にグループは解散、EvansとともにRitchie Blackmore、Jon Lordが結成したRoundaboutのオーディションを受け加入、まもなくDeep Purpleに改名する。
デビュー・シングル「Hush」がアメリカで大ヒットを記録し、アルバムも好セールスを記録するなど幸先の良いスタートを切るが、本国ではヒットに結びつかず、1969年にはIan GillanとRoger Gloverを加えてハード・ロックに方向転換を図る。その後、「In Rock」や「Machine Head」などの名アルバムを次々にチャートに送り込み、全世界的な成功を収める。
1976年のPurple解散後はLord、Tony AshtonとのPaice,Ashton & Lordや、後期Deep Purple時代の仲間でシンガーのDavid Coverdaleが結成したグループWhitesnake、Gary Moore Bandなど一線級のビッグネームでの活躍を続ける。
1984年には黄金期のラインナップでDeep Purpleを再編して長らく活動。Blackmoreに続いてLordが離脱した後は唯一のオリジナル・メンバーとなった。2012年に他界したLordとはPurple以外のグループでも長らく活動を行動を共にしたが、お互いの妻が双子の姉妹でプライベートでも姻戚関係にあった。
セッション歴としては、Lordのソロ・アルバムをはじめ、Bernie Marsdenや同じくドラマーのPete York、Yorkの相棒Eddie Hardinなどのソロ作への参加が知られる。
