1943年5月8日生まれ。イングランド南西端コーンウォール州ファルマス出身。John Mayallとの活動や相棒Johnny Almondとの双頭グループMark-Almondなどでの活動が知られるアコースティック・ギターの名手。本名Jon Michael Burchell。
学友のギタリストAlun Daviesとアコースティック・デュオとして活動。1963年、Shel Talmyがプロデュースに当たったアルバム「Relax Your Mind」でDeccaからメジャーデビューを果たす。
その後セッション・ギタリスト、アレンジャーに転じ、人気絶頂期のMarianne Faithfullのレコーディングやライブをサポート。一方でBrunswickからソロ名義でシングルを発表、この頃からJon Markを名乗るようになった。
1968年には再び盟友のDaviesやNicky Hopkinsらセッション・ミュージシャンによるグループSweet Thursdayを組んで同名アルバム、シングルを制作。良質な楽曲を多数提供するなど中心メンバーとして活躍をみせたが、まもなく経営難となる米国のレーベルTetragrammatonからのリリースだったこともあって一切のプロモーションやギグが行われずに活動は短期に終わっている。
1969年半ばにはアコースティック編成となったJohn MayallのバンドにJohnny Almondとともに加入。フィルモア・イーストでのライブ作「The Turning Point」と次作「Empty Rooms」の2作に参加した。
1970年にはAlmondと後にRiff Raffを結成するTommy Eyre、Roger Suttonの4人でリーダーグループMark-Almondを結成。Markの独特な歌唱と技巧的なフィンガー・スタイルのギター、叙情的なAlmondのサックス/フルートによる個性的なジャズ・ロック・サウンドを確立し人気バンドとなった。
米国のブルース系レーベルのBlue Thumbと契約し、コンスタントにアルバムをリリース。72年には大手Columbiaに移籍して名作「Rising」を発表するなど順調な活動を続けていたが、1972年10月にハワイで左手薬指の大半を失う大怪我を負いバンドは解散を余儀なくされる。
1975年、ソロ・アルバム「Songs For A Friend」でシーンに復帰。同年にはAlmondと再合流してMark-Almondを再編。以前のバンド形態からユニット編成となり、その後1980年代半ばまで活動を続けた。1996年にも一時再編を果たしてアルバムを制作している。
1980年代半ばからはドイツ、その後はニュージーランドに移り、レーベルWhite Cloudを主宰。主に環境音楽やケルト音楽などを手掛け、ソロ・アルバムの制作をはじめ多くのアーティストのプロデュースを担当した。
