tenor & soprano sax/keyboards
ブラックバーン出身。英ロック界きってのセッション系サックス・プレーヤーの1人。1960年代後半から多くの有名グループのメンバーとして活動したほか、ブルース/ファンク系ほかジャンルを問わず多数のセッション参加作品を残している。
学生バンドでの活動を経て1967年にJohn Mayall’s Bluesbreakersのメンバーとしてメジャーシーンに登場。1年強の在籍期間中に同年秋リリースの「Crusade」からジャズ色を強めた翌年の「Bare Wires」の4枚のアルバム（うち2枚はライブ）に参加した。
この後、共演の多いセッション系オルガン奏者Mick Weaverのソロ・プロジェクトWynder K. Frogに参加。3枚目のアルバム「Into The Fire」ではWeaverと共同プロデュースを担当している。
1969年には再編されたThe Misunderstoodを経て、同グループの発展系となるJuicy LucyをGlenn Campbellらと結成、71年まで在籍し3枚のアルバムに参加した。71～72年には準メンバーとして活動していたKeef Hartley Bandにも在籍し、ライブ作「Little Big Band」などの録音に参加。
1971年頃からはファンキー・ロックのビッグ・バンドGonzalezを組んで中軸メンバーとして長らく活動。70年代後半には多数のアルバムを制作した。同時にChris FarloweやBryan Ferry、Frankie Millerら大物アーティストのバック・バンドのメンバーとしてもアルバム制作、ツアーなど精力的に活動。
グループ・メンバーとしての活動と平行してセッション・マンとしても大活躍し、ジャズやブルース、ファンクのみならず、フォーク、プログレッシヴなど多様な音楽性を持ったアーティストのレコーディングに参加。特にMick EveやSteve Gregoryらと組んだThe Gonzalez Horn Sectionとして数多くのセッションに参加、膨大な数のアルバムに客演している。
74年にはGonzalezのメンバーらの協力でソロ・アルバムを制作。77年になって米国のKarateからリリースされている。80年代以降は米国に活動の場を移し、ブルースやジャズ・シーンを主体にセッション・マンとして長らく活動を続けた。
