1942年3月1日生まれ。ハンプシャーのウォータールーヴィル出身。King Crimsonのオリジナル・メンバー。デビュー・アルバム「In The Court of The Crimson King」ではIan McDonaldとともに音楽的なイニシアティブを握り、歴史的名盤と評される原動力となる活躍をみせた。
1950年代にロックンロールやスッキフルに影響を受けてドラマーに。1960年代前半からボーンマスで弟のPeter GilesとJohnny King & The RaidersやThe Dowlands、Trendsetters Limitedなどで活動。同グループではソウル・アーティストのほかBen E. Kingの英国公演のバックなども経験。Parlophoneからシングル4枚をリリース。
1967年、The Brain名義でシングルをリリース。この活動を経てメンバー募集広告を通して知り合った同郷のギタリストRobert Frippを加えてGiles, Giles & Frippを結成する。翌年にロンドンに進出し、Deramとの契約を獲得。アルバム1枚とシングル2枚を残した。グループはIan McDonaldを加えて間もなくKing Crimsonに発展する。
1969年には、デビュー・アルバム「In The Court of The Crimson King」を制作。McDonaldとともに音楽的なイニシアティブを取り、ロック史に残る名盤との評価を得る。リリース後には北米ツアーに出るが、Frippとの方向性の違いなどからMcDonaldとともに終了直前に脱退を表明する。
すでに離脱を表明していたが、Frippの要請で弟のPeterとともにセカンド・アルバムのレコーディングには参加。同年にはMcDonaldと新ユニットMcDonald & Gilesを結成、評価の高い同名アルバムをリリースするが、McDonaldが疲弊し短活動の期間で解散した。
その後はセッション活動に転じ、プログレッシヴ・ロックからシンガーソングライター系の作品に至るまで様々なジャンルの数多くの作品に参加している。Jackson Heightsの諸作やRupert Hineプロデュース作品、Gimmsへの参加などが有名。
2002年には、1978年頃に録音していたソロ音源が初のソロ・アルバムとしてリリース。同年にはRobert Frippを除く前期King Crimsonの主要メンバーらと21st Century Schizoid Bandを結成。同バンドのギタリストは娘婿に当たるJakko Jakszykが担当。翌2003年には早々に脱退し、その後自身のグループThe Michael Giles MAD Bandを結成した。
