1944年３月１日生まれ。ロンドンのシェパーズ・ブッシュ出身。The Whoのリード・ヴォーカリストとして世界的な成功を収める。積極的なチャリティ活動や映画俳優としても著名。
1950年代の後半、グラマースクール時代に音楽に目覚めバンド活動を開始。当初はリード・ギタリストとして活動し、1959年には学校を退学し鉄板工をしながらセミプロとしての活動を始める。
1961年にThe Detoursを結成。翌62年に同じグラマー・スクール出身のJohn Entwistle、Pete Townshendをバンドに誘う。同年末に仕事中に手を負傷し、これを契機にTownshendがリード・ギターに回り、自身はリード・ヴォーカルに転向している。
64年２月には同名のバンドの存在をテレビで知り、グループ名をThe Whoに改名。まもなく新ドラマーにKeith Moonを迎えて、モッズにアピールするためマネージャーのPeter Meadenの指示でバンド名をThe High Numbersとして７月にシングル・デビューを果たす。
デビュー・シングルの不発、マネージメントの変更を経て同年秋に再びグループ名をThe Whoに戻す。マーキーのレギュラーを獲得し、パワフルなステージがロンドンで評判を呼ぶようになり、65年１月にはシングル「I Can’t Explain」で再デビュー。同シングルは全英チャートの８位を記録するヒットとなり、一躍人気バンドになる。
過激なギグでも注目され、楽器を破壊するPeteとKeithに対抗して生み出したステージ上でマイク・コードを振り回すアクションがトレードマークとなった。その後、1982年の解散までグループのフロントマンとして活躍、全世界で大きな成功を収めた。
1975年には映画「Tommy」に主演し俳優としても認められるようになり、その後音楽活動の一方で多数の映画に出演。1973年からはソロ活動も並行させ、The Who解散後の1985年にAlan Shacklockのプロデュースでリリースした「Under The Raging Moon」などで成功を収めている。
小児がん治療のためのボランティアや各種チャリティ活動にも積極的に取り組んでおり、1989年の結成25周年ツアーに続き、90年代半ばからはThe Whoを再結成してパーマネントな活動に入るなど、現在まで多彩な活躍を続けている。
