1946年１月10日生まれ。リヴァプール出身。David BowieやFrank Zappa、Journey、Jefferson Starshipなど英米の多くのビッグ・ネームを渡り歩いた名ドラマー。
1963年、地元リヴァプールのバンドDerry Wilkie & The Pressmenで本格的なプロ・ミュージシャンとしてデビュー。その後もThe Flamingos、The Mojosなどのマージー・ビート系グループで活動する。
1966年にロンドンに進出し、秋にはPeter Green在籍時のJohn Mayall’s Bluesbreakersに加入、アルバム「A Hard Road」の録音に参加して広く知られる存在となる。翌年春にはJeff Beck Groupに加わり、シングルの録音に参加したほか、最初の本格的な本国ツアーを敢行した。
1966年秋に独立し、Victor Broxらと自身のリーダー・バンドRetaliationを結成。４枚のオリジナル・アルバムで英国独特のヘヴィ・ブルース・ロックを披露。69年末には同グループを発展させて新たにBlue Whaleを結成、プログレッシヴな方向性をみせたアルバム１枚を残す。同年の一大ブルース・セッション・アルバムSweet PainではJunior Dunnの変名で参加している。
この後渡米し、Frank Zappa率いるThe Mothers Of Inventionに加入。ライブ作品の「Fillmore East-June 1970」や「Waka/Jawaka」など、1970年代前半の名盤多数の録音に参加。Retaliation時代にコンビを組んだベースのAlex Dmochowskiも呼び寄せ、リズム・セクションを再結成している。
以降、David Bowie Band、Journey、Jefferson Starship、Whitesnakeなど英米の大物グループを渡り歩く活躍をみせる売れっ子ドラマーとして、世界的な成功を収めた。1990年代以降も積極的な活動を続け、Eric BurdonのNew AnimalsやUFOなどで健在振りを示した。2008年にはソロ・アルバムを発表。
