1940年7月8日生まれ。ベッドフォードシャー州ケンプストン出身。NucleusやSoft Machineでの活躍がよく知られるジャズ・ベーシスト。カンタベリー人脈の名グループDeliveryのメンバーとしても著名。
1950年代末から地元のジャズ・クラブなどで演奏活動をスタート。1960年代後半にロンドンへと進出し、Alexis Kornerの短命ブルース・バンドNew Churchのセッションを経て1969年秋、Carol Grimes、Phil Millerのブルース・バンドDeliveryに加入し名アルバム「Fools Meeting」のレコーディングに参加した。
その後、Michael Gibbsのバンドで演奏する一方、Keith Tippett GroupやTippett総指揮の一大ジャズ・オーケストラCentipedeなどに参加。Tippettとは彼のソロ名義の名作「Blueprint」やTippettのリーダー・グループOvary Lodgeの1stアルバムなどに参加するなど、この時期特に多く名演を残している。
1971年にはJeff Clyneの後任でIan Carr率いるジャズ・ロック・バンドNucleusに加入。Carrのソロ名義となった「Belladonna」や中期の名作「Labyrinth」で演奏。73年には過去2作にゲスト参加していたSoft Machineに加わり、76年の「Softs」まで在籍し、中期の活動を支えた。
1970年代後半はGraham Collier MusicやHarry Beckett’s Joy Unlimited、サックス奏者Barbara Thompsonのグループなどで活動。80年代は重鎮Stan Traceyのレギュラーとして演奏している。
セッション歴も多彩で、Mike CooperやJackie McAuley、Gillian McPherson、Harvey Andrewsらシンガーソングライター系アーティストの好アルバムへの参加が多いほか、本職のジャズ分野では71年のElton Deanのデビュー・ソロ作などがある。
2011年にはSoft Machine Legacyに加入。2枚のアルバムを制作。
