1943年2月19日生まれ。ロンドン出身。カンタベリー・シーンやジャズ・ロック分野を中心に活躍したドラマー。
12歳の時にドラムスの演奏を開始。1960年代前半からプロ・ミュージシャンとして活動を始め、1967年には南ア出身のピアニストChris McGregorらを中心とするジャズ・バンドGwigwi’s Bandに加わり、「Kwela」を残したほか、Roy Harperのアルバム「Come Out Fighting Gengis Smith」のレコーディングに参加するなど頭角を現す。
1968年ごろにはドイツ人サックス奏者Gunter Hampelのバンドでもプレイ。69年には詩人Pete BrownのグループPiblokto!の結成に参加するが短期で離脱。The Battered Ornamentsを短期手伝った後の同年末には、米国出身のベーシストBruce Barthol、 ギタリストGary Petersonが渡英後に結成したFormerly Fat Harryに加入。唯一のアルバムとなった「Formerly Fat Harry」を残した。
同年夏にはDeliveryの後進バンドDyble, Coxhill & Miller Brothersに加入。野外ギグでデビューするものの、レーベルとのレコーディング契約を果たせずに短期間で解散。同年からはGongに加わり、グラストンベリー・フェスや名アルバム「Flying Teapot」でプレイした。
Barbara Thompson’s Paraphernaliaを経て76年にはDon Rendellのグループで演奏。The Don Rendell Fiveでリリースされたアルバム「Just Music」を発表している。70年代後半はサックス奏者Gary Windoのバックも務めた。
セッション・ドラマーとしても活躍。Bob Downesの名作「Deep Down Heavy」やThe Battered Ornaments時代の仲間Chris Speddingの初期作などジャズ系作品からRalph McTellやRoy Harper、Bert Janschなどフォーク系シンガーの作品でも幅広く参加している。
中でもRobert Wyattの事故後の復帰作となった「Rock Bottom」、続く「Ruth Is Stranger Than Richar」への参加が特に有名。74年にはライブもサポートした。カンタベリー人脈でのセッション参加はこのほかLol Coxhill & Steve Millerのアルバム参加もある。
