ロック・クラシックス「青い影」の世界的な大ヒットで知られるGary Brooker率いる名バンド。ロックとクラシックの融合に成功した数少ないグループの１つ。
ロンドン東部に位置するサウスエンド出身のビート・バンドThe Paramounts解散後、Gary Brookerが友人の紹介で詩人のKeith Reidと出会いソングライティング・チームを結成し曲作りをスタートさせる。この時制作したデモ作品が評価され、Deramとのレコーディング契約を獲得。メロディ・メーカー誌でメンバーの募集を行い、ドラマーにBobby Harrison、ギターにRay Royer、キーボードにMatthew Fisher、ベースにDavid Knightsを加え、鍵盤奏者が２人、さらに作詞担当メンバーを擁するユニークな編成の新グループとして1967年に結成される。バンド名はプロデューサーGuy Stevensが飼っていた猫の名前に由来する。
同年５月にリリースした第１弾シングル「青い影」が英シングル・チャートで６週連続トップ、米国チャートでも５位まで上昇するなど世界的な大ヒットを記録。ロックの垣根を越えてその後も長きに渡って愛されるロック・クラシックスの代表曲となる。同曲で実現させたクラシックとビート・ロックの融合は後のプログレッシヴ・ロックの先駆となり、同時に後進のロック・グループに大きな影響を与えることとなった。
「青い影」が予想外に大ヒットしたことに伴うマネージメントの変更とそのゴタゴタに巻き込まれる形で同年夏には早くもHarrisonとRoyerが脱退し、ヘヴィ・ロックのFreedomを結成。このため、BrookerのThe Paramounts時代の仲間Robin TrowerとB.J. Wilsonが加わる。マネージメントの変更でレーベルもRegal Zonophoneに移籍したことに伴ってデビュー・アルバムは同レーベルからリリース（このため大ヒット曲「青い影」はオリジナル・アルバムには未収録）。同じメンバーで初期の名作アルバム「Shine On The Brightly」「A Salty Dog」を制作する。
1969年に入ってFisherとKnghtsが相次いで脱退。これに伴いThe Paramounts時代の仲間でベースとキーボードができるChris Coppingが加入。この時点で作詞担当のReidを除くすべてのメンバーがThe Paramountsの出身者で占められる体制となった。この頃はJimi Hendrixに傾倒していたTrowerのハードなギター・リフが存在感を増すようになる。
1971年にはTrowerがよりハードな音楽性を求めて脱退。ギターに元Big BerthaのDave Ballと専任ベース奏者として元Every Which WayのAlan Cartwrightが加入。Trowerの離脱で再びクラシック路線へと向かい、翌年春にはオーケストラとの共演を収録した意欲作「Live In Concert」をリリースする。
次作「Grand Hotel」からはBallに代わって元CochiseのMick Grabhamが加わり、約４年に渡って安定したラインナップで活動。77年にはCartwrightに代わってPaladin、Snafuなどで活躍してきた名キーボード奏者Pete Solleyを加えて通算10枚目のアルバム「Something Magic」を発表。しかし、米国ツアーの５月にBrookerを除く全メンバーが脱退を表明。これによりBrookerはグループの解散を決意する。
1990年、長らくグループを支えた名ドラマーのWilsonが他界。これをしのんでBrookerが翌年グループの再編を決意。Fisher、Trower、Reidが参加して1991年には約15年振りの新作アルバムをリリースした。その後もパーマネントの活動を継続。ギターにはRoger Chapmna & The Shortlistやセッション系の売れっ子ギタリストGeoff Whitehornを迎えて精力的な活動を続けた。
