1943年３月17日生まれ。ハンプシャー州サウザンプトン出身。Jeff BeckやDavid Bowieのバック・バンドやT.Rexなど多くのビッグ・ネームを渡り歩く活躍をみせた名ドラマー。セッション・ドラマーとしても著名。
1961年、ケント州ダートフォードで結成されたSounds Incorporatedのメンバーとしてメジャー・デビューを果たす。同グループはGene VincentやCilla Blackらソロ・シンガーをはじめ、Little Richard、Jerry Lee Lewisら訪英した米国ミュージシャンらのバック・バンドとして活動したほか、シングル多数、アルバムをリリースする人気バンドとして活躍した。
1967年に脱退し、翌1968年には彼のパワフルなドラミングを大きくフューチャーしたインスト・ソウル・シングル「Soul Thing」をDeccaからソロ名義でリリース。一方でセッション・ワークを開始し、同年にDonovanのシングル「Barabajagal」に参加、1969年１月にはこのレコーディングにともに参加したJeff Beck Groupに加わり同年夏の解散まで活動、セカンド・アルバム「Beck-Ola」に参加した。
同年秋にはJeff Beck Groupのツアー中に知り合ったカナダ人ギタリストJames Blackとパワー・トリオMay Blitzを結成。同時代のハード・ロック系アルバムの名作に数えられる２枚のアルバムをVertigoに残した。続いて72年からはGurvitz兄弟率いるＨＲグループThree Man Armyに加わり、２枚のアルバムを制作。
1974～75年にはDavid Bowie、Kevin Ayersのバックを務め、セッション・ドラマーとしても大きな成功を収める。75年にはAyersのバンドで一緒になったギタリストOllie HalsallとともにBoxerを結成、２枚のアルバムを制作（セカンドは当時リリースが見送られ、解散後の79年にリリースされている）。76～77年は末期のT.Rexでも活動。
同グループのラスト・アルバムとなった「Dandy In The Underworld」を発表するも、Marc Bolanの死去で活動を停止している。 1980年代に渡米し、ナッシュビルに移住。後にラスベガスに移った。
