1937年1月29日生まれ。ロンドン出身。60年代後半に勃興した英国ニュージャズを代表する精鋭ベーシスト。ジャズ・ロックからフリージャズまで幅広く活躍、カンタベリー・シーンともつながりが強く、1970年代はNucluesやGilgamesh、自身のリーダーグループTurning Pointを率いて活動した。
当初はサックス奏者を目指すもまもなくダブル・ベースにスイッチ。1955～57年の兵役を経て本格的な演奏活動を開始する。ロカビリースタイルのバンドTony Crombie & His Rocketsに加わりプロとしての第一歩を踏み出すが、そこでの演奏に飽き足らなくなり、すぐにジャズへと転換する。
1958年にはRonnie ScottとTubby Hayesという2人の英ジャズ界の巨人を擁するThe Jazz Couriersに加入。英ハード・バップの頂点を極めた59年の名作「The Couriers Of Jazz」の録音に参加して注目の存在となる。1960年代に入るとHayesやStan Traceyのカルテットやビッグ・バンドで活躍。
1960年代半ばからはIan CarrやGordon Beck、Tony Oxleyらとの共演、さらにはTrevor WattsとのAmalgamや即興集団Spontaneous Music Ensembleへの参加などを通してフリージャズ分野にも進出、当時の新鋭らと数多く演奏活動を行った。
1969年秋にはCarrと新グループNucluesを結成。ジャズ・ロックの名作となったデビュー作「Elastic Rock」など初期3作品の録音に参加した。72年にはギタリストGary Boyleのジャズ・ロック・バンドIsotopeに参加、Alan GowenのグループGilgameshでは同名デビュー・アルバム「Gilgamesh」をレコーディング。
1976年には女性シンガーPepi Lemerらとリーダー・グループTurning Pointを結成。Gullに「Creatures Of The Night」「Silent Promise」の2作品を残した。1988年にはGilgamesh時代の仲間でギタリストのPhil Leeとのデュオ作「Twice Upon A Time」を残している。
その後も積極的な音楽活動を継続する一方、ロイヤルアカデミーオブミュージックのジャズコースの講師などを務めて後進の育成に尽力するなど長く活躍を続けた。2009年11月16日、心臓発作のため他界。
