英フリージャズ/ジャズ・ロック・シーンで活躍したサックス、フルート奏者。特にSoft Machineの名作アルバム「Third」やKeef Hartley Bandなどへの参加が有名。セッションでも幅広く活動。
1960年代半ば、多く共演するトランペット奏者Henry Lowtherらとジャズ・シーンで活動。一方でGeorgie FameやManfred Mannなどロック/R&Bグループでも客演するようになり、1966年にはManfred Mannの大ヒットシングル「Pretty Flamingo」でフルートのソロを演じて脚光を浴びる。
1960年代後半は、Pete Brown & His Battered OrnamentsやThe People Bandなどフリージャズ、ジャズ・ロック・シーンで演奏。1969年にはサイケデリック・サウンドからフリージャズへと大きく方向転換を果たした変革期のSoft MachineにElton Deanとともに加入。2枚組の大作となった3rdアルバム「Third」の録音に参加した。
1970年前後はセッションでも多く活躍。LowtherとともにKeef Hartley Bandの準メンバーとしてライブやレコーディングを支えたほか、同グループで一緒になったギタリスト/シンガーMiller Andersonのソロバンドでも演奏。
フォーク・ロック分野の良作アルバムにも顔を出しており、Nick DrakeやMick Softley、John & Beverley Martyn、Ian Matthewsらのアルバムセッションでも活躍した。1974年には自身唯一のソロ・アルバム「Jam Sandwich」をギタリストPete Cusakの協力でリリース。
1970年代後半からは演劇やダンスミュージック、マルチメディア制作など幅広い分野に進出。1980年代末からはThird Ear Band、さらにその派生グループの１つHazchemなどでも活動。
