1947年4月15日生まれ。リンカンシャー州スタンフォード出身。Van Der Graaf Generatorでの活躍で知られるサックス/フルート奏者。イタリアを主体に欧州のプログレッシヴ/ジャズ・ロック・シーンで幅広く活動した。
1969年、Van Der Graaf Generatorを脱退したJudge Smithが結成したジャズ・ロック・バンドHeebalobに参加、同グループはレコード会社との契約を得るまでには至らず、同年秋には新興のCharismaレーベルと契約し、Peter Hammillによって再編されたVdGGに加入した。
その後はHugh Banton、Guy Evansとともにサウンドの中軸を担う活躍をみせ、「H To He Who Am The Only One」「Pawn Hearts」などの名作アルバムをリリース、欧州を中心に高い人気を博した。
72年夏に一度解散するが、74年にHammillのソロ作のレコーディングを契機に活動を再開させる。76年には後期の傑作「Still Life」をリリースするが、77年2月に家族との時間を増やしたいという理由で正式メンバーから外れ、末期のツアー、レコーディングにはゲスト、準メンバーとして参加。2004年の再結成にも参加したが、アルバム1枚を残して2006年に再び脱退した。
豊富なセッション歴を持ち、Peter Hammillのソロ作の常連として多数のアルバムに参加している。仲間内ではJudge SmithやNic Potterのソロ作、またスピンオフ・グループThe Long Helloの諸作にも参加、82年発表の3作目では自身が中心になって制作を行った。
1980年代以降はドイツやイタリアなど欧州を中心に活動の幅を広げ、多くのミュージシャンと共演。90年代にはソロ活動も活発化させた。
