1946年3月27日生まれ。南ロンドンのベックナム出身。英国の国民的グループStatus Quoのメンバーとして長年に渡って第一線で活躍を続けた名ミュージシャン。ギター、キーボード、ベース、ハーモニカなど多彩な楽器を操るマルチ奏者としても知られる。1970年代はソロでも活動。ファースト・ネームはAndrew表記も。
1964年にビート・グループThe Preachersに参加してプロとしての本格的な音楽キャリアをスタート。同年半ばにバンドはThe Herdに発展、1966年には若き日のPeter Framptonを加えて人気バンドとなり、67～68年にかけてトップテン・ヒットを2曲送り出すなどの活躍をみせた。この頃からすでにソングライティングの才覚を発揮し、オリジナル曲を多くバンドに提供。
69年にはThe Herdの解散を受けてドラマーのHenry SpinettiやAmen Cornerのブラス隊とJudas Jumpを結成。アルバム1枚を残すも短命に終わり、その後、セッション活動、ソロに転向する。70～71年にはフォーク・グループStorytellerの2枚のアルバム・プロデュース（1作目はFramptonとの共同）を手掛け、この時期に同グループの紅一点Caroline Attardと結婚した。
1970年のソロ・シングルに次いで72年には初のソロ・アルバム「Gone To My Head」をリリース。70年代から80年代前半にかけてはソロ活動にも積極的で計４枚のアルバムと多くのシングルを発表した。セッション活動も平行して精力的に行い、盟友FramptonやLesley Duncanらのソロ作に参加。80年代前半にはPink Floydをサポート。
一方で73年にStatus Quoの全英トップ・アルバム「Hello !」にゲスト参加。76年からレギュラー・ゲストとして全作品とツアーに参加するようになり、82年には正式メンバーとなった。1984年に一時グループは解散宣言を行うが、翌85年に早くも復活。以来、Francis Rossi、Rick Parfittとともに不動のメンバーとして活躍を続けている。
2011年には久々のソロ・アルバム「Unfinished Business」を発表。
