活動期間1962.7-
全世界で高い知名度と人気を誇るロック・バンドの代名詞的存在。1962年に活動をスタートさせて以来、1度も解散することなく半世紀以上現役バンドとして第一線で演奏活動を継続させた。後進アーティストへの影響は計り知れず、ロック史に残るヒット曲多数を生み出した。
幼馴染で小学校時代の級友だったMick JaggerとKeith Richardsが、1960年ロンドン東部のケント州ダートフォード駅で再会。その時、MickがChuck BerryやMaddy Watersのレコードを持っていたことで２人は意気投合、まもなくMickと同じ学校に通っていたDick Taylorを加えてLittle Boy Blue & The Blue Boysを結成、演奏活動をスタートさせる。
1962年に入るとジャズクラブなどでギグをみたBlues Incorporatedに接近、ジャムセッションやゲストでのステージ出演を経験する。同グループには後にドラマーとなるCharlie Wattsが在籍、同じくゲスト出演していたギタリストのBrian Jonesのギタープレイに大きな影響を受け、Mick、Keith、Dickの3人はBrianと彼の友人でピアニストのIan Stewartを加え、新バンドを結成する。Brianの加入でDickはベースにチェンジ。ドラマーはまもなくメンバーとなるBill Wymanのバンド仲間で後にThe Herdでも演奏するTony Chapmanが就く。
バンド名はMaddy Watersの曲名からBrianが命名。同年7月、マーキーでデビュー・ギグを行うが、この時のドラマーは後にThe Kinksの結成に参加するMick Avoryが務めるなど、一部流動的なメンバー構成となっていた。
まもなくGiorgio Gomelskyがマネージャーに就き、11月にはプロ・デビューが決定。クロウダディ・クラブの常連バンドとして徐々に人気を博していく。この時、本来の持ち楽器がギターでまだ学生だったDickが脱退。Chapmanもバンドを離れたことから、ベースにはオーディションでBill Wymanの加入が決まり、ドラマーにはBlues IncorporatedのCharlie Wattsを引き入れることに成功する。
デビューに際してAndrew Loog Oldhamが新たにマネージメントやプロデュースを担当。「ルックスがバンドにそぐわない」との理由からピアノのIan Stewartを外して5人編成にさせたのは有名な逸話。正統派のThe Beatlesに対して不良っぽいイメージを利用したメディア戦略、MickとKeithに自作曲を書くことを提案するなど、初期Stonesの商業的な成功に大きな役割を果たす。Stewartはその後ロードマネージャー兼レコーディング・メンバーに転身し、「6人目のStones」としてその後も長く活動を共にすることに。
1963年6月、Chuck Berryのカバー・シングル「Come On」でデビュー。チャートの21位の中ヒットを記録する。翌64年2月に発表した3rdシングル「Not Fade Away」は3位にまで上昇する大ヒットを記録。本国およびヨーロッパで人気に火が付き、4枚目のシングル「It’s All Over Now」が英チャートで初のナンバーワンをヒット、続くデビュー。アルバムは12週連続1位と、一気にトップバンドに上り詰める。
その後、MickとKeithのソングライティングの才能が開花し、一気に自作曲が増加。「(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction」や「The Last Time」など次々とナンバーワン・ヒットを生み出していった。65年の「Satisfaction」は米チャートで初の首位を獲得、早くも世界的な成功も手中に収めている。
1966年には「Paint It, Black」、67年には「Let’s Spend The Night Together」など英米でシングル・ヒットを連発する一方で、メンバーはドラッグにかかわるトラブルに巻き込まれていく。特に初期にはバンド・リーダーとして音楽的なイニシアティヴを握っていたBrianがドラッグに深く傾倒。MickとKeithの書く自作曲が大ヒットを続ける中でバンド内での存在感を失い、67～68年には大麻所持で相次いで逮捕される。やがて演奏活動にも支障を来たすようになり、1969年6月、バンド側から解雇される。
John Mayallの推薦を受けたMick Taylorが新ギタリストに決定。しかし、脱退からほどなくBrianが自宅のプールで変死。7月5日に行われたハイドパークのコンサートは新ギタリストのお披露目ギグから急きょ追悼コンサートとして行われることになった。
Taylorの加入により、懸案だったライブ・パフォーマンスが格段に向上。スタジオ・アルバムも「Sticky Fingers」「Exile On Main St.」など傑作を次々とリリースするなど黄金時代を迎える。1970年にはDeccaとの契約を満了し、自身のレーベルRolling Stonesを設立している。ただ、音楽的な充実に反してドラッグに関するトラブルは続き、KeithやMickのドラッグに関する裁判・逮捕などに悩まされる。73年には入国許可が下りずに初の来日公演が中止となる。
1974年末にはこうした状況に不信感を持ち、さらに新たなキャリアを模索し始めていたTaylorが脱退。これを受けて75年にはミュンヘンで多くのギタリストを招いてオーディションを兼ねたセッションが行われ、Taylorの後任には従来から親交の深かったFacesのRon Woodの加入が決定。
1970年代後半にはパンク・ロックの隆盛とともに酷評を受けるが、78年には英米でアルバム「Some Girl」が大ヒット、批評を払しょくする。Mickとkeithの関係悪化が囁かれ始めた1980年の「Emotional Rescue」も英米でチャートのトップを獲得、衰えぬ人気を示した。
80年代半ばにはバンド内の人間関係が悪化の一途をたどり、メンバーはソロ活動にシフトするなどバンドとしての活動は停滞。80年代末になるとMickとKeithのわだかまりが解消し、3年ぶりのスタジオ作「Steel Wheels」を制作、リリース後には久々のワールドツアーを敢行する。1991年には初の来日公演が実現している。この大規模なツアーの終了をもってWymanが脱退（正式なリリースは93年）、この後4人で活動を継続する。
スタジオ作品のリリース、ツアーなどの頻度は落ちるものの、1990年代、2000年代も第一線で活躍。2005年には8年ぶりの新作「A Bigger Bang」をリリース。2012年には結成50周年を迎え、翌年にはグラストンベリー・フェスへの出演、69年以来ハイドパークでライブを行い健在振りを示した。
