1945年2月13日生まれ。リバプール出身。The Remo FourやAshton, Gardner & Dykeなどのグループで活動したドラマー。1980年代以降はドイツに移ってバンド活動を続けた。
1960年代前半からリバプールで音楽活動を開始。1961年春にKarl Terry & The Cruisersに加入し本格的にプロとしてのステージを経験。同年11月には同じくリバプールのマージービート・バンドのThe Remo Fourに移籍し、Johnny SandonやTommy Quicklyらのバック・バンドとして人気を呼ぶ。
グループ単体でも3枚のシングルをリリースしているほか、66年にはドイツオンリーながらも後年、モッズ・サウンドの1枚として高い評価を得る唯一のアルバム「Smile」をリリースしている。
68年の解散後は、同グループの後期メンバーだったオルガン奏者Tony Ashtonと元The CreationのベーシストKim Gardnerを加えてAshton, Gardner & Dykeを結成。ソウルフルな演奏とメッセージ性の強い歌詞が評判となり、71年のセカンド・シングル「Resurrection Shuffle」は全英3位を記録する大ヒットとなった。同グループでは3枚のアルバムをリリース。
解散後の1972年には元Yesのキーボード奏者だったTony KayeとBadgerを結成して2枚のアルバムを発表。その後はセッション活動に入り、Tony SheridanやPat Traversらのバックを務めた。この頃に70年代のHawkwindのステージ・メンバーだったダンサーのStaciaと結婚している。
1970年代末には西ドイツでパワートリオBauer, Garn & Dykeを結成。1980年代以降はドイツ・ハンブルグに在住し、B.Sharp、Boogie Houseらブルース/Ｒ＆Ｂ系グループで長らく演奏活動を続けた。
