1941年4月5日生まれ。ロンドン南西のニュー・マルデン出身。英トラッド、フォーク・ロック界を代表するフィドル奏者/ヴォーカリスト。1969年に加入したFairport Conventionでは「エレクトリック・トラッド」の導入とその音楽性の確立に大きく貢献し、その後はグループの中心人物としてグループを支え続けた。
生後間もなくヨークシャーに移り、8歳の時に一家でバーミンガムに移住。6歳からフィドルの教育を受け、学校卒業後は様々な英フォーク・ミュージシャンと交流を持ち、多数のアーティストらと共演。1950年代末にはバーミンガムのフォーク・グループThe Ian Campbell Folk Gourpに加入、66年からはMartin Carthyとのデュオで活動。この頃から広くフォーク・シーンで名を知られる存在となる。
69年には「エレクトリック・トラッド」の新境地を模索していたFairport Conventionのサード・アルバムの録音にゲストで招かれ、ロック史に輝く金字塔となった次作「Leige & Lief」から正式メンバーとなる。Sandy Dennyとともにメンバーらに多くのトラディショナル・ソングを伝授する一方、Richard Thompsonと演奏面やソングライティングで大きく貢献しバンドの顔として活躍。その後はメンバー変遷の激しい中で一貫してグループを支え続け、文字通りグループのリーダーとして大きな存在感を誇った。
1970年代末に一度解散を余儀なくされるが、80年代半ばまではフェスなどでFairportとして断続的な活動を続ける。この頃にはSimon Nicolとデュオでも積極的に活動。Fairportを離れた後は自身のグループWhippersnapperを結成。脱退後の89年からは再びMartin Carthyとのデュオでも活動した。
セッション活動は1960年代前半から多数。A.L. LloydやEwan MacCollら英フォーク界の重鎮らとも数多く共演を果たした。1970年代後半からはFairportのメンバーらをバックに積極的なソロ・ワークも展開し、76年作の「Swarbrick」を皮切りに名アルバムを多数発表。
93年から3年間はオーストラリアに移住。また、盟友CarthyやJohn Kirkpatrickらとの英フォーク版スーパーグループBand Of Hopeを結成してアルバムを制作、さらにフォーク・パンク・バンドRoaring JackのAlistair Hulettとコラボレートするなど1990年代も旺盛な活動を展開した。
しかし、90年代末には肺気腫を患い、一時は新聞の誤報で死亡説が出るなどその後の活動が心配されたが、後に復帰。仲間のミュージシャンらとソロやセッションを含めたマイペースな演奏活動を継続させた。
