1948年7月19日生まれ。ランカシャー・ボルトン出身。Phil CollinsとのFlaming Youthや元The NiceのLee Jacksonが率いたJackson Heightsなどで活動したキーボード奏者。セッション活動も多数。
学生バンドThe Three Jetsで本格的な音楽活動を開始。同グループでは後にセッション・ギタリストとして活躍するBarry Reynoldsと一緒だった。1965年、アクリントン出身のグループで後にYesで活躍するJon AndersonやKing Crimsonなどでの活動で知られるIan Wallaceらが在籍したThe Warriorsに加入。
The Warriors解散後の1968年にはRonnie CarylやPhil CollinsらとFlaming Youthを結成。アルバム1枚を残すが、CollinsのGenesis加入により解散を迎えている。
1971年にはLee JacksonのグループJackson Heightsに加入。Vertigoにフォーク・ロック感覚の好アルバム3枚を残した。1970年代中期にはBobby Harrisonのスワンプ・ロック・バンドSnafuやRoxy MusicのAndy Mackayが手掛けたテレビ・シリーズの企画グループRock Folliesでも活動。
1970年代後半にはJohn Miles Bandに加わり、Milesのソロ名義3枚のアルバムに参加した。1981年にはThe Holliesに書き下ろした楽曲がヒット、1983年には同グループのアルバムにもゲスト参加した。1980年代半ばにはMeat Laofのバック・バンドでも活動。80年代後半はスタジオ・グループBoys Don’t Cryに加わり、シングル・ヒットを生む成功を収めている。旧友Collinsらソロ・アーティストのバック・バンドでも活躍した。
1980年代からはソロ活動も行っており、1981年にRCAからChatton名義で初のソロ作「Playing For Time」を発表。1991年にはセカンドアルバム「Spellbound」を制作。レーベルMusic De Wolfeにライブラリー音源集も残している。
