1948年５月12日生まれ。バーミンガム近郊のハンズワース出身。弱冠16歳でプロ・デビューを果たした”天才アーティスト”。Spencer Davis Group、Trafficを経てソロでも世界的な成功を収めた英国を代表するミュージシャンの１人。
３歳年上の兄Muff Winwoodの影響でアメリカのロックン・ロールに興味を持つ。1960年代初め、バーミンガムを拠点に兄のバンドThe Muff-Woody Jazz Bandなどで活動。63年にはクラブなどでブルースの弾き語りをやっていたSpencer Davisと出会い、Spencer Davis Groupを結成。地元パブの専属バンドとして活動中にIslandレーベルを設立したChris Blackwellに見出され契約を果たす。
当初はSpencer Davis R&B Quartetと名乗っていたが、デビューに際して改名。1965～1966年にかけてはシングル「Keep On Running」「Somebody Help Me」を立て続けに英国チャートのナンバー・ワンに送り込み、一躍大人気グループとなった。
1967年4月には「バンドがコマーシャルになりすぎた」という理由でMuffとともに脱退（Muffはプロデューサーに転身）。SDG時代から親交を深めてきた元The HellionsのDave MasonやJim Capaldi、サックス奏者のChris WoodとTrafficを結成。一時活動休止時期があったものの1974年まで活動し、9枚のオリジナル・アルバムを発表。様々な音楽性を吸収した独自のサウンドを披露し、Capaldiとのソングライティング・コンビで数多くの名曲を生み出し世界的な人気を博した。
1969年にはスーパーグループBlind FaithをEric Clapton、Ginger Bakerらと結成したが、アルバム1枚を残したのみで短命に終わっている。Traffic解散後はソロ活動に入り、順調な活動を継続。特に1980年発表の「Arc Of A Diver」は全世界で700万枚のセールスを記録するなど、ソロ・アーティストとしても大きな成功を収めている。1994年には盟友CapaldiとTrafficを再編しアルバムを制作、ツアーも行った。
白人離れしたソウルフルな歌唱力が最大の特徴だが、ハモンド・オルガンやギター、ベースなど多様な楽器を操る卓越したマルチ・ミュージシャンとしても著名。そのためセッション歴は多岐にわたり、盟友ClaptonやCapaldiのソロ・アルバムはもちろん、数多くの有名ミュージシャンとジャンルを超えた競演がある。
