1946年５月10日生まれ。ウスターシャー州ウスター出身。Trafficのオリジナル・ギタリスト。1970年代はソロとしても活躍した。
1960年代前半、The Shadowsタイプのローカル・グループThe Jaguarsで活動。1964年にはシングル１枚をリリース。同年、本格的にプロとしての活動を始めたJim Capaldiらの同郷グループThe Hellionsに加入する。シングルをリリースして欧州遠征などを経験するが不発に終わり、1966年に脱退。
その後Julian Covey & The Machineを経て1967年春にThe Hellions時代の仲間Jim Capaldi、1965年頃から交流を深めていたSteve Winwood、Chris Woodの４人で新グループTrafficを結成。デビュー・シングルが全英５位のヒットを記録、Mason作の２ndシングル「Hole In My Shoe」はチャートの２位まで上昇する大きな成功を収める。
しかし、Winwoodとの確執やいきなりの成功に戸惑い、デビュー・アルバムのリリース後の1967年末に早くも脱退。1968年に入って間もなくFamilyのメンバーの協力を得てデビュー・ソロ・シングル「Just For You」を発表する。この年にはFamilyのデビュー・アルバムのプロデュースも担当している。
同年５月には米国ツアーを控えたTrafficに復帰。セカンド・アルバムの録音にも参加したが長続きせず、同年秋に再離脱する。間もなくWinwoodがBlind Faithの結成に動きバンドは解散状態となる。
1969年初頭にはWinwoodを除くTrafficのメンバー３人とキーボード奏者Mick Weaverを加えて新ユニットMason,Capaldi,Wood & Frogを結成。数回のギグを行うが、渡米を決意して脱退、同年末には初のソロ・アルバム「Alone Together」の録音に入り、Delaney & Bonnieらの協力で1970年にリリースした。
その後は長く米国を拠点にソロ活動を展開し多くのヒットを生む活躍をみせる。1971年には新生Trafficの２作目となるライブ作品「Welcome To The Canteen」にも参加している。1980年代以降は寡作となるが、マイペースな活動を続け、1994年には友人のMick Fleetwoodの勧めでFleetwood Macに加入し、アルバムの録音に参加。1996年からは自身のグループを率いてソロ活動を再開した。1998年には旧友Capaldiとツアーも行っている。
