1947年7月8日生まれ。ケンブリッジ出身。CochiseやQuiverなどの名グループでの活動で知られるケンブリッジ・ロック・シーンを代表するドラマー。本名John Andrew Wilson。
ケンブリッジのローカルグループで16歳からドラマーとしてプレイ。1963年にはThe NewcomersというグループでギタリストDavid Gilmourと一緒になり、1965年末にはGilmourのグループJokers Wildに加入し再び顔を合わせる。その後Rick Willsを加えてBullit、The Flowersとバンド名を変えて1967年まで欧州を中心に活動するも解散。
1967～68年にはオルガン奏者のTony kaye、ベーシストBruce Thomasらとの短命グループBitter Sweetで活動。1969年には再びWillsとのリズムセクションでブリティッシュ・スワンプの名グループCochiseを結成。2枚のアルバムに参加した。
1970年末には同郷のTim RenwickがBruce Thomasと結成したグループQuiverに移籍。フォーク・ロックの名アルバム2枚に参加する。後にSutherland Brothersと合体し、Sutherland Brothers & Quiverと名乗り活動した。この頃にはRenwickやThomasらとともにセッション活動も充実させた。
1980年代はGilmourの要請によりPink Floydのツアー・サポート・ドラマーとしても活躍。Gilmour、Pink Floydとのパートナーシップは長期にわたり、リタイア前のSyd Barrettのソロ作、Gilmourのソロ・アルバムへのセッション参加でFloydファンにも広く名前を知られる存在となった。
1990年代はアイリッシュ・シーンのミュージシャンErrol WalshやSteve SimpsionとのグループCoyotesなどでも活動した。
