1947年8月25日生まれ。ブリストル出身。英国ジャズ・シーンを代表するピアニスト/コンポーザー。King Crimsonのアルバムにゲスト参加したことや妻がシンガーのJulie Driscollということもあってロック分野でも高い知名度を持つ。本名Keith Tippetts（最後にsが付く）。
5歳でピアノを始め、クラシックの英才教育を受ける。1967年、ジャズの新人育成セミナー・バリーサマースクールに参加し、最優秀ピアニストに選ばれ注目の存在となる。68年夏にはこの時一緒に最優秀に輝いたNick EvansやMark Charig、Elton Deanらと自身のグループThe Keith Tippett Groupを結成。ジャズ・ロックの佳作として人気の2枚のアルバムを発表する。
1970年初頭にはRobert Fripp率いるKing Crimsonの2ndアルバムの録音に参加。Frippに大きな影響を与え、正式加入の要請を受けるが固辞している。Crimsonのアルバムにはこの後、同年末の「Lizard」71年の「Islands」の録音にもゲスト参加した。
1970年にはロックとジャズの融合を目指した大編成の実験オーケストラCentipedeを結成。ギグを行ったほか、翌71年にはFrippをプロデューサーに迎えてアルバム「Septober Energy」を発表した。
これと前後して即興スタイルのグループを組んで活動を始め、再びFrippのプロデュースでソロ名義の「Blueprint」を発表。さらに妻Julieやパーカッション奏者Frank PerryらとのOvary Lodge、次いでKeith Tippett’s Arkなど自身のグループを組んで活動し、良質なアルバムを残した。
並行してAmalgamやベーシストHarry MillerのIsipingo、Keith Tippett Group時代からの仲間Elton DeanのグループNinesenseなどで活動。76～77年には元Soft MachineのベーシストHugh Hopperを加えてアルバム「Cruel But Fair」を制作。同じピアニストの重鎮Stan Traceyとのデュオ、名ドラマーLouis Moholoなどとも積極的な演奏活動を繰り広げた。
1980年代は元King Crimsonのヴァイオリン奏者David CrossとのLow Flying Aircraft、名手Howard Rileyとのコラボレートなどで活動。90年代は自身のプロジェクトMujician、Nick EvansらのグループDreamtimeなどで活動。97年の来日公演はアルバム「Friday The 13th」としてリリースされた。
この後もソロや自身のオーケストラ、Octetを率いて精力的に活動。サックス奏者Paul Dunmallとも数多く共演。JulieとのインプロビゼーショントリオThe Dartington Trioなど様々な形態の編成で良質な演奏を続けた。
