1951年1月30日生まれ。ロンドンのチズウィック出身。Genesisのフロントマン、ソロ・アーティストとして大きなな成功を収めた名ドラマー兼シンガー。俳優としても映画出演を果たすなど、エンターティナーとして全世界的な知名度を誇る。
子供の頃にミュージカル「オリバー」の舞台に立つ。子役俳優として演劇を学びながら、ドラマーとしても腕を磨く。1968年、Freeholdというグループで本格的なプロ・ミュージシャンとしての活動をスタート。まもなく元The Warriorsで後にJackson Heightsなどでも活動するBrian ChattonらとFlaming Youthを結成する。
Fontanaからアルバムをリリースするもまもなく解散する。翌70年、音楽紙のメンバー募集広告を見てGenesisのオーディションを受け合格。8月に正式メンバーとなった。出世作となたサード・アルバム「Nuesery Cryme」の録音から参加し、グループの黄金期を支える。
75年にはリーダーPeter Gabrielの脱退という苦境に立ったが、後任のヴォーカリストの選考が難航。このため、従来から声質が似ていた自らがフロントマンに立つことでバンドの存続を図る。
従来のプログレッシヴ・ロックからポップ路線に方向転換した1980年にはアルバム「Duke」が世界的なヒット。バンドの顔としてグループをけん引し、シングル・ヒットも飛ばすチャートの常連となるなど世界的な人気バンドへと躍進を果たした。
特に80年代はソロ活動を活発化させ大きな成功を収め、ソロ・アーティストとしても不動の地位を獲得、俳優業にもチャレンジした。93年にグループを離れ、ソロとしての活動に重点を移した。2006年にはGenesisに復帰して再びバンド活動を再開させた。
メディアへの露出の多さなどからエンターテイナーとしての側面が強調されるが、技巧派ドラマーとしても著名。75年にはGenesisの活動とは別にジャズ・ロック、フュージョン色の強いパート・タイム・バンドBrand Xにも参加。John Goodsall、Percy Jonesら職人系ミュージシャンを擁して79年までの活動期間中に多数のアルバムをリリースしたほか、精力的なギグを行っている。
2008年には表舞台からの引退を表明、翌年には脊髄手術を受けるが、2010年には久々のソロ・アルバム「Going Back」を発表、全英チャートで首位を獲得し健在ぶりを示した。
